This school year we have started incorporating an independent learning hour into each school day. During this hour my children choose what they want to learn. I don’t “schoolize” any of this time or require anything to be turned in. I don’t even require discussion. They just tell me what they want to study and off they go. It is the last hour in our school day so it is something my kids look forward to in the school day.
My younger son almost always gravitates to Scratch programming. My older son typically chooses something science related. It helped deal with complaints about not having time to study certain topics during the school day. Now, if they want to study something that isn’t on the school schedule they can choose to use their independent learning hour to do just that.
