As part of my son’s microbiology study, he is learning about the different kinds of cells in the human body. He enjoys making things with food so we sat down to figure out how to make an edible muscle fiber model. We decided on a basic circle cake with Twizzlers inside.
We first attempted to do lots of little circles of Twizzler bundles, but it didn’t work. Perhaps it would have worked if we had frozen the cake rounds and cut the sections before putting the cake together. What worked for us was to use a larger glass to cut out chunks of the cake. Into those rounds we stuffed as many Twizzlers that we could fit. The Twizzlers had to be cut to size prior to inserting them into the cake. We carved out three round shapes with the glass functioning as a cookie cutter. Once finished it looked like this:
Now for the most important question. Would you eat a piece of this cake?
We made an edible human cell by decorating a sugar cookie.
I love this! We’re doing a unit on the human body this year, this will be a fun activity for our muscle unit!
