Covering the Presidential Election

When the election came around this year I wanted my kids to get some hands-on experience with the process of electing a president in the United States.  When the presidential election came around last time my kids were pretty young.  Instead of having my kids stay up late to watch the returns live I had them go over the results the next day.  We started off by going over the candidates and several of their positions on a selection of topics.  Living outside the US meant that my kids had no exposure to the candidates.  Because I had all the results, I gave them the results in order from the states with the lowest number of electoral votes to the ones with the most electoral votes.  This kept the race a nail-biter until the end.

As we went over the results for each state my kids colored the states red or blue to indicate which party received the electoral votes from that state.  I kept a running total of the number of electoral votes for each party on a white board.

My 4 year old participated too, but she colored the states to try to match a large wall map instead.
