This is our 9th year homeschooling. Earlier this year I started to record a typical day as I had previous years. As I started to record my child’s day, the day took an unexpected turn and was anything but typical. So I ditched recording the day, deciding to try again another time.
Then one child became sick. Then another one….and another one before we started another round of colds. It wasn’t long before other events derailed us for months! Yes, months!
You would think that after 9 years of homeschooling, I would have derailments under control, right? No, life happens. Derailments can sneak up on you whether you are brand new to homeschooling or an old pro.
Life can be a great teacher. I started this homeschooling journey from an unschooling perspective and that philosophy is still part of how I view learning. Even though we haven’t been “hitting the books” so much lately, learning has been happening.
While we have yet to find our flow this school year, I’m not giving up. Some years flow has come easy and other years it has not. This year, flow has virtually been non-existent! Still, I know we will get there eventually. Maybe we will end up finding a flow this year to have a somewhat “typical” day before our school year finishes. Maybe not, but we will keep on learning either way.
