Yesterday we completed the first creative science challenge of the school year. My boys had to build a contraption that would safely transport a raw egg from the second story of our house to a cement patio. They had a few rules to follow:
- The contraption could not exceed 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches
- No parachutes
- Anything around the house could be used (pending approval).
- The contraption had to be build within 1.5 hours
- Once they were given the egg they had 5 minutes to secure their egg and turn over their contraption.
My little girl was in the contest too, but she was mostly there as an observer since I build a contraption for her. This one is a small box with a rubber bands set up to keep the egg from any surface.
This contraption by my 3rd grader is a mix of many different things. He has straws, toilet paper rolls, cardboard, a box, and paper. He put the egg in the top and stuffed in some toilet paper before he said it was ready to go.
My 5th grader used a cardboard box, newspaper, coffee filters, and lots of tape! He stuffed the egg in the middle, closed up the box, and taped it shut.
Now, for the exciting part…..every egg landed safely without cracking. Yay!!
