I love using real books for reading. Compilations and readers are okay, but pale in comparison to using real books.
My youngest son is reading The Cat in the Hatright now. It is always helpful to me to read a little of the book to see if it would be a good fit for my son’s reading level. Here is a short excerpt from The Cat in the Haton page 40:

My oldest son is finishing up Henry Huggins. He is really enjoying it and wants to get the other books in the series. I have had him read aloud to me, but have just started to let him read the chapter to himself and then I have him read an except aloud and ask him questions about what he read. Henry Hugginsis a chapter book. Here is an excerpt from page 123.
When they came to Klickitat Street Henry saw Scooter and Robert playing catch. Mary Jane and Beezus and her little sister Ramona were standing under a snowball bush, shaking petals down over themselves and pretending it was snowing.
“Hey, look!” yelled Henry, waving the paper at them.
