I am about to list our study of mammals. We are spending nearly half of our science time this year looking at mammals with a focus on classification. We are taking advantage of a zoo membership and going to the zoo several times during the school year.
This study has no tests or worksheets. It does have books, DVDs and links to internet sites. Right now we approach science as something to be experienced rather than a bunch of facts to learn. I find that facts are best learned through experience anyway. A major portion of our time is artsy in nature. They will be drawing different species of animals. Once the chosen species is drawn they will record the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species of the animal. I will save each drawing and have them bound into a book at the end of the school year.I avoided books that were too simplistic, yet I wanted to include books with lots of pictures for my visual learner. So most books that I have selected are around the 9-12 year old age level according to Amazon with a few geared for a younger audience. There are pictures on every page and the books provide more information than the basics. Due to time constraints I typically didn’t choose a book when a DVD was available on the animal. I opted to not use an animal encyclopedia as a spine because they did not give much information about each animal. It is a better fit for us to use individual books that go into more depth and not cover as many animals.
I have broken the study up by weeks. Most weeks will be around 1.5-2 hours of our time.
