Ocean Unit Study

Ocean Unit Study

During the cooler seasons this school year we are studying the ocean. My five year old is free to participate, but I put together this study for my second grader. This study is a 31 day study that takes about 40 minutes each day. We will do this once or twice a week until we can resume our flower studies in the spring. I am using 7 different books and online videos for this study. The books are:

Awesome Ocean Science

Tidal Zone (Exploring the Oceans)
Sunlit Zone (Exploring the Oceans.)
Twilight Zone (Exploring the Oceans)
Midnight Zone (Exploring the Oceans.)
Seafloor (Exploring the Oceans)

The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4)

  1. I am starting homeschool for my 2nd and 5th grader after the Christmas break. I plan on continuing their math and language arts from the texts they are bringing from their public school, but I do not have any materials for science or social studies. (My 5th grader told me she got an A in social studies last term because they only had one test and everyone got an A. Yikes!) They really didn’t do much at school, but my 5th grader has a love for nature and has picked up quite a bit from exposure to experiences outside of school. Do you think that this study would be appropriate to do with both of them? I’d love to be able to use the same subject matter and just modify for their age difference so that my older child is still challenged but not too difficult for the 2nd grader. Btw – I am so glad I found your site, I have been searching for the past two months for ideas for science. I felt like you were reading my mind! We also are Christian, but did not want to teach science from a strictly young earth view. Thank you for sharing your wealth of information!

    1. Yes, I think it would work for those ages. The books contain quite a bit of information and wouldn’t be too young for that age. I aimed this study toward my then 2nd grader who was a science nut who wanted lots of details.
