As I was considering which chapter books would work best as readers for my daughter this school year, I decided to go a different direction. There are so many great picture books that are designed to be read aloud by an adult that would work just as well. I went in search of classic picture books and chose ones that fell within the 3rd-5th grade level. I’m combining those with some chapter books for this school year. I like looking at the grade level and lexile level as well as my child’s interests in order to determine which order to read the books. For reading, I have my daughter read aloud to me about 15-20 minutes most school days.
I’ve organized the book lists into picture books according the the grade level, picture books according to the lexile level, chapter books according to the grade level, chapter books according to the lexile level, and how I’ve organized the books for my kid. We own some of the books, but a majority of them will need to be reserved ahead of time from the library. Having a list helps me see which books I should reserve soon.

This is great. How did you determine the Lexile levels for the picture books? I am currently trying to find picture books with a lexile above 950. If Alexander & the Very Bad (etc) Day meets the grade, there must be quite a few others. How do I find out which of my (hundreds) of picture books qualify for my current need?
I noticed that the first book on your list is one of the Babar books, and another Babar title is also on the list. I advise readers to be cautious with this series. There have been many critcisms of these books because of racist, sexist, and colonialist attitudes shown in the stories and the pictures. People may argue that it’s “just a children’s book”. But with so many other amazing children’s book titles out there to choose from, I recommend choosing something else.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but thank you so much for making this list. My son is a first grader but his latest eval has him reading at a 3.8 level. Chapter books don’t hold his attention very well just yet, so I decided to see if there were any upper level picture books that might be better for him. Your list is just the thing I was looking for, so again, thank you very much.
I use picture books for this purpose also, thank you for a great well organised list!
